Stucco

The most common reason for failure of stucco is neglect. Regular maintenance is required to prevent excessive water penetration and breakdown of the surface.

Stucco Remediation

Staining

It is commonly caused by non ferrous metals situated in the substrate or stucco build up.

Cracking

Is typically caused by movement in the building. There are different ways to prevent this heli-bar stitching and renewing of substrate maybe effective.

History

For many centuries the term ‘stucco’ was used generally to cover any form of internal or external rendering which not only protected the wall but was finished in such a way as to decorate it and to enhance the architectural qualities of a building.

Efflorescence

Is a staining of brickwork, masonry and concrete, caused by salts being washed out of construction materials, and being deposited on the surface of building materials by the evaporation process of water.

Types of Stucco

Lime/sand, Oil based, Roman cement and Portland cement are all different materials used to achieve the required finish.

Stucco Sealing

Repair

Defective stucco should be removed back to a sound substrate whilst retaining as much of the original material as possible. Using traditional skills and repair mortars, the exact details and features will be replicated.

Replace

In some cases the extent of the failure may be such that wholescale renewal of the stucco on a wall cannot be avoided. Templates of all original mouldings and features should be taken before removal. Using traditional skills, stucco will be replaced in natural hydraulic lime mortars replicating all original features and details.

Stucco mouldings and other details

Where moulded decoration has deteriorated, it should be repaired rather than removed. The reinstatement of missing stucco details is very important in building conservation to improve the appearance and value of the property.

Boundry walls and balustrades

The setting of many stucco terraces and villas is completed by a front Boundry. These should be retained or reinstated to achieve a unified treatment to complement the character of stucco buildings.
